近10年，深入学习方法逐渐成为人工智能领域最重要的方法之一。目前，深度学习在科学、工程以及工业界的诸多领域取得了里程碑式的进展：深度学习在自然图像集ImageNet上的物体识别能力已经超越了人类的平均识别水平；AlphaGo在围棋对弈中战胜韩国围棋名将李世乭和中国围棋名将柯洁；谷歌的机器翻译系统的核心算法也逐渐依赖深度学习；在医疗诊断的某些任务中深度学习方法也在不同程度上超越了医生。
此次研讨会是北京大学与新加坡国立大学联合举办的第一届联合研讨会，受到北京大学与新加坡国立大学校级合作计划的资助。研讨会旨在为来自数学、统计、人工智能、生物医学工程、神经科学等相关领域的学者提供交流平台，促进两校在深度学习理论及应用方面的合作研究。
